Parents learn how they can foster character values of kindness in their children.

During last weeks' National Character Counts Week, HudsonWay Immersion School was honored to host Dr. Tom Lickona, considered the father of modern character education for a webinar opened to the public. Dr. Lickona, professor emeritus at the State University of NY at Cortland in developmental psychology, discussed the most recent of his eight books entitled, “How to Raise Kind Kids”.

Dr. Lickona discussed how kindness is at the heart of good character. He went on to say, “When students are kind, they not only make others happy, they themselves are happiest in the process.” He shared ten tips on fostering kindness in children based on his research and study in the field for over 50 years.

An important aspect of HudsonWay Immersion School’s mission is to develop children with the empathy and emotional intelligence to be effective global leaders. Founder Sharon Huang believes deeply in the importance of good character. “Children will learn to act in ways that reflect how they themselves have been treated, so it is incumbent on our schools and parents to model kind behaviors that, like a chain, will propagate generation after generation.” Students at HudsonWay Immersion School learn content in two languages, either Mandarin and English, or Spanish and English. Research shows that studying in multiple languages and learning about other cultures develops a natural empathy for others.

Parents can register here for a download of the full webinar. A sneak peak is available below.

HudsonWay Immersion School (HWIS) is a full immersion Spanish and Mandarin school serving children aged 2 through grade 8. The school is located on two campuses – Stirling, NJ and Midtown West, NYC.   Children learn all of their subjects in two languages - Mandarin and English, or Spanish and English. They achieve high biliteracy, strong academic skills, and exemplary character to become global leaders.
